The management and disposal of radioactive material can, when not handled properly, be an expensive problem. Stuart Hunt & Associates is committed to providing our clients with comprehensive information and an efficient course of action when it comes to the disposal of radioactive material. We have the experience to deal with a wide spectrum of radioactive material disposal issues and our personnel are available to offer on-site assistance in packaging and transportation to our facility or any other location.
Radioactive disposal costs are based on a combination of radiologically hazardous lifetime, volume of radioactive material and selected waste stream. As a service to our clients, we can offer several options for reducing the cost of disposal. One of these is the removal of a sealed radioactive source from its source holder, which results in a significant reduction in the volume of material sent for disposal.
We are licensed by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) to take possession of unwanted radioactive sources and nuclear gauging devices for the purpose of volume reduction and disposal. Furthermore, when we take possession of a client's unwanted radioactive sources, all liability and accountability for the material is also transferred to us. |
| The safe transport of radioactive material requires containers which maintain their structural integrity under the most rigorous conditions, including transportation accidents. All of the containers that we use for transporting radioactive material on and off clients' sites meet the criteria specified by the CNSC's "Packing and Transport Regulations for Nuclear Substances" for Type A containers. We apply these same strict controls to the containers we design and test for our clients. |
| Unwanted radioactive sources and nuclear gauging systems can be shipped directly by clients to Stuart Hunt & Associates or arrangements can be made to have our personnel come on-site to package and transport the radioactive material off-site. In either case, we will make sure that suitable shipping containers with supporting Type A or Type B documentation, radiation hazard labels and shipping documents, all in compliance with TDG and CNSC regulations, are supplied. When a client chooses to arrange for the shipment of radioactive material off-site, we will provide a list of instructions to ensure that the shipment is transported in accordance with regulatory requirements.
When using our disposal service, Stuart Hunt & Associates assumes liability for the material that is being disposed. By simply transferring the unwanted material to our possession, a client can take comfort in knowing that the responsibility for the material also leaves with the material. We take disposal of unwanted radioactive materials very seriously and provide a serious, yet simple and inexpensive service. |
| Accountability is an important aspect of any radioactive material management and disposal program. Stuart Hunt & Associates maintains a detailed set of records for all radioactive sources and nuclear gauging devices accepted for volume reduction and disposal. These records are subject to periodic inspection by the CNSC. A library of Type A "Tested Conditions of Transport" documents for a wide range of devices and shipping containers is maintained. These documents along with "Special Form" certificates for sealed radioactive sources are made available upon request, and at no charge, to those of our clients who require them. |
