Reliable and accurate instrumentation is essential for the detection and measurement of radiation intensities generated by radiation emitting devices and sources of radioactive material. Stuart Hunt & Associates Ltd. offers a wide range of instrumentation sales and services to ensure that our clients have access to the equipment that best satisfies their requirements.

Our services include:

  • calibration and repair of radioactive contamination and radiation survey equipment
  • sales and rental of radioactive contamination and radiation survey equipment for both man made and naturally occurring radioactive material.

We are an approved Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission radiation survey meter calibration agency. This means that our equipment and procedures satisfy the criteria set out in the CNSC regulatory guide R-117 (Requirements for Gamma Radiation Survey Meter Calibration). This means that our clients can expect to receive the highest quality and accuracy from our calibration service.

Radioactive contamination and radiation survey equipment is manufactured by a number of different firms and we are continually adding our to our library of instrument calibration procedures. Click here to view a list of models we are currently authorised to calibrate.

All calibrations are performed using a NIST traceable Cs-137 source for survey meters, or a pulse generator for contamination monitors.

As an additional service to our clients, we are also able to repair all of the instrumentation that we calibrate. We encourage you to contact our office for practical advice on the repair of radiation detection equipment.

Selection of the correct instrument is critical for effective radiation dose and radioactive contamination assessments. Our clients rely on us to provide them with cost-effective equipment that will meet their requirements. Our strong collective background of knowledge and practical experience with a wide range of radiation detection equipment allows us to assist our clients with the selection of equipment for a wide variety of conditions. Stuart Hunt & Associates is able to confidently advise clients on the selection of instrumentation most suitable for their needs.

Based on long-term satisfactory use of their equipment, we have chosen to become representatives for a select group of companies which we feel present outstanding value in instrumentation. We are the Canadian representative for Ludlum Measurements Inc.

For some clients, the purchase of radiation detection equipment may not be cost-effective. For short term use, we have created several rental options for our clients. We encourage you to contact our office for more information on the availability of rental equipment.

In keeping up with current radiation detection technology, our instrumentation service has been expanded to include battery replacement and operational verification of the Siemens EPD MK1 line. Our verification procedure is compliant with the manufacturer's recommended verification procedure ensuring that all values produced are within nominal operating guidelines. Our service is designed to give confidence that an EPD is still within its design specification for radiological measurements.

The following checks are performed on an EPD:

a) The EPD is irradiated with gamma radiation to verify that the various stored calibration constants are still valid.
b) We confirm the beta window thickness has not changed due to incorrect maintenance or abuse.

In the unlikely event that an EPD fails these checks, the faulty unit will need to be sent to a re-calibration facility. All units which have their batteries replaced need to undergo the re-verification process.

We strive to keep our turnaround time as brief as possible in all our services. Normal turnaround times for our EPD service is about three business days not including shipping and ordering of parts.
