Radiation Safety Officer

Important update: Due to COVID-19, Radiation Safety Officer training has been held via webinar/video conference. We will continue to offer this course as a webinar for limited dates which you can find in the calendar. Starting September 2022, this course will be presented In-person in Edmonton, alternating monthly between the Mississauga office.

For online webinar training participants, the videoconference link will be provided to all confirmed attendees via email. Please be assured, that the course content and format will not change and that you will receive a training record and course certificate upon completion.  Course binder along with the slides will be provided to you via .pdf prior to the course so that you can follow along just as you would in a classroom setting. The course will start at 9:00 AM EST and end no later than 5:00 PM EST (7:00 AM - 3:00 PM MST or 6:00 AM - 2:00 PM PST).

This course examines the role of the RSO for licenses using sealed sources of radioactivity (radiography excepted) and the radiation safety, administration and regulatory skills needed to effectively carry out this position. Course participants will receive a course manual which is theirs to keep. Upon completion of the course a course certificate will be awarded.

  • Basic introduction to radioactivity and radiation
  • The biological effects of radiation
  • Instruction on basic radiation protection strategies
  • Basic instruction on radiation detection instrumentation
  • Introduction to the regulatory framework
  • Discussion on the Nuclear Safety and Control Act
  • Discussion on the General Nuclear Safety Regulations
  • Discussion on the Radiation Protection Regulations
  • Discussion on the Nuclear Substances and Radiation Devices Regulations
  • Completing a licence application
  • Discussion on the CNSC compliance program and licensing fees
  • Annual compliance report, inspections and audits
  • Duties common to the position of RSO
  • Components of an effective radiation protection program
  • Please bring a calculator capable of handling exponents. Some basic algebra skills are also required to handle some of the calculations presented during the course.
