Stuart Hunt & Associates Welcomes Major Milestone for Canada's Nuclear Future
June 25, 2026
Stuart Hunt & Associates (SHA) is welcoming the Government of Canada's decision to designate the Nuclear Waste Management Organization's (NWMO) Deep Geological Repository (DGR) as a project of national interest under the Building Canada Act.
The announcement underscores the federal government's commitment to strengthening Canada's nuclear sector and advancing long-term solutions for the safe management of used nuclear fuel. The proposed repository, which will be located in northwestern Ontario, is designed to provide a permanent and secure solution for Canada's high-level nuclear waste.
The DGR project represents a critical component of Canada's growing nuclear industry and will support the continued expansion of clean, reliable nuclear energy across the country.
Sean Hunt, President of Stuart Hunt & Associates, said the announcement marks an important milestone for the industry and reinforces Canada's position as a global leader in responsible nuclear stewardship.
"Having a stable, long-term solution for high-level nuclear waste is critical to the continued growth and success of Canada's nuclear industry," said Hunt. "The Deep Geological Repository project demonstrates Canada's commitment to managing used nuclear fuel safely and responsibly for future generations."
Hunt said the designation of the project as being in the national interest recognizes the importance of nuclear energy in meeting Canada's long-term energy and climate goals.
"This is a significant step forward for Canada's nuclear sector," Hunt added. "We look forward to working with the industry on this important project and supporting the organizations involved with the radiation protection instrumentation, calibration services, and technical expertise that have been the foundation of our business for more than four decades."
For more than 40 years, Stuart Hunt & Associates has supported Canada's nuclear industry with radiation protection equipment, calibration services, and technical expertise. As Canada continues to invest in nuclear generation and infrastructure, the company remains committed to helping ensure these projects are delivered safely and successfully.
The recognition of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) Deep Geological Repository as a project of national interest represents another important milestone in Canada's nuclear future and further strengthens the country's reputation as a leader in both nuclear energy and responsible waste management.
